Viewing Grant Proposal: Traverse City Light & Power-Solar and Battery Storage
Traverse City Light & Power (TCLP) will install a 28 kW solar canopy and 40 kW battery storage system at its centrally located Customer Service Center to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity and enhance energy & communication services resiliency. This downtown facility houses critical infrastructure supporting downtown Traverse City, including electric distribution controls and fiber-optic servers that power businesses, emergency services, and tourism-related industries. By generating and storing clean energy on-site, the project will minimize TCLP’s need for purchased power while ensuring
uninterrupted service for the city’s economic hub. A public education component will showcase real-time energy data, inspiring businesses and residents to adopt similar renewable energy solutions. The initiative supports TCLP’s Climate Action Plan and Michigan’s clean energy goals while protecting the sustainability of a region dependent on Lake Michigan’s natural resources and tourism.
