Viewing Grant Proposal: Universal EV-Site 4 (480kW) Charging Station - 200 Cloverleaf-Houghton Lake
With a commitment to enable electric vehicle charging infrastructure & increase public transit especially
in distressed areas, Universal EV proposes to apply for the Program Infrastructure Grant to install,
operate, & maintain DCFC EVSE at the proposed site. Developing EV charging infrastructure will not only fulfill the EV infrastructure gap but also promote the sale of EVs thereby reducing the range anxiety
among EV drivers. This will in turn lead to the reduction of harmful emissions due to the use of nonrenewable fuels, providing a healthier environment for these communities.

I don't like this plan at all. Firstly, Michigan is the automobile capital of the United States. Our car manufacturers are focused on regular vehicles (gas/diesel). Most of the vehicles they make are not electric powered. This points to the economic viability of electric cars compared to gas cars. If it was good for GM to build EV's, they do that more. But it's not. People want regular vehicles. If GM/Ford was actually committed to electric, they'd take on the job of installing charging ports. But they aren't really, they pretend to be so that they can sell a few cars to the environmentally conscious. If anybody should be building these charging stations, it should be a Michigan company.
Secondly, the Governor is crazy to think we should abolish gas cars and reduce our emission levels so drastically by 2030 (just five years from now). It can not, and should not happen. These grants are simply a waste of money.
Thirdly, Houghton Lake is a terrible place for these charging stations. As noted in the report, Houghton Lake has a high poverty level. The people that live here can not afford regular cars, let alone electric cars. Even if they could, most would not buy an electric car. The cars are lame. The cars are a hassle to own. It takes a lot of planning and wasted time to fill up with electricity. Most drivers in Houghton Lake often take long drives to big cities, to vacation spots, etc. It would not be viable for them to own these cars. All of this supports not having charging stations, since they won't be used by the locals very much. Will they be used by tourists? Well, many tourists come from Detroit. Historically, Houghton Lake became a popular vacation spot for autoworkers in the 1960's. Still today that is true, and many will not buy electric cars because it is antithetical to the legacy of Detroit and its car manufacturers. Noone will add Houghton Lake to their vacation plans just because there are a couple charging stations.
Finally, the report believes these charging stations will bring businesses to Houghton Lake. I see no reason why this would be true. In fact, people come to the Houghton Lake area to escape the urban ruins. They seek a community of old. I can not think of a single business that would move to Houghton Lake because of the charging stations. In any further report, I'd like the proposal to write just one example of what business would be more inclined to be in Houghton Lake because of the charging stations.
Signed, a life-long resident of Roscommon County.
