Viewing Grant Proposal: City of Ypsilanti-Solar on Residential Homes

Most solar power is installed at utility scale or on upper SES homes, not lower-income households due to costs and tax credit issues. Our goal is to install solar on +100 low-income homes, saving homeowners $50 per month. Installing +100 systems at one time, in one area, will produce an economy of scale, yielding a cost below $2/watt. In addition to lowering CO2 and providing low-income residents savings, the project 3will also train and hire local residents, creating new job opportunities.

I am supportive of this grant proposal as an Ypsilanti resident. The project will position Ypsilanti as a model city for equitable clean energy adoption across Michigan and beyond. The benefits are many including financial relief for low income households by reducing energy costs by $50 per month for over 100 low-income families. The grant will also address barriers to solar adoption for low-income households, such as upfront costs and lack of access to tax credits. Of course the reduction of CO2 emissions is important and will contribute to a cleaner environment and improved air quality in Ypsilanti. The grant will create local jobs by training and hiring Ypsilanti residents in solar installation and maintenance and enhance Ypsilanti’s reputation as a leader in innovative, community-driven renewable energy initiatives. The project will be cost effective, achieving a cost below $2/watt by installing over 100 systems in one area at the same time. This will demonstrate a scalable model for reducing solar installation costs in other communities. Finally, there is alignment with local renewable energy efforts, building on Ypsilanti’s history of successful solar projects like SolarYpsi and its SolSmart Gold designation.

I support this project! Making solar available to low-income people is a creative tactic for raising our community up. This proposal promotes home-ownership and the sense of personal investment and wellbeing that makes a community strong in the long term. It also raises the overall profile of renewable energy sources, encouraging solar as a viable, precedented option for folks to invest in.

I enthusiastic support the City of Ypsilanti’s project proposal to the Michigan Public Service Commission’s Renewable Energy and Electrification Infrastructure Enhancement and Development program. This initiative not only addresses crucial energy needs but also aligns perfectly with the city's sustainability goals and reputation as a solar energy pioneer. I strongly urge you to support this initiative. It represents a significant leap forward in our city's energy landscape, marrying environmental stewardship with social equity and economic advantages for our most vulnerable residents.

Ypsilanti has already set a high bar with its impressive 1.7MW of solar capacity, translating to 90 watts per capita. This new project aims to build on this success by extending the benefits of renewable energy to those who need it most. By focusing on low-income households, we can ensure that the advantages of clean energy are distributed equitably across our community. The proposed dovetails with Ypsilanti's objectives of reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency. As a proud recipient of the SolSmart Gold designation, Ypsilanti has consistently demonstrated its commitment to sustainable practices, and this initiative will further cement that reputation. The project also offers a multitude of other benefits. It allows substantial financial relief for low-income families through reduced energy costs in addition to creating local employment opportunities. Furthermore, by decentralizing energy production, we increase our community's resilience to power disruptions. Lastly it sets a replicable model for other communities, showcasing how solar energy can be made accessible across all economic strata. I strongly urge you to support this initiative. It represents a significant leap forward in our city's energy landscape, marrying environmental stewardship with social equity and economic advantages for our most vulnerable residents.

I write in support of the City of Ypsilanti-Solar on Residential Homes proposal. This grant would lower fossil fuel consumption, helping sustain our physical environment, and reduce costs for households that are sometimes forced to decide between paying their electricity and heating bills and other necessities like groceries. It's a win for some of neediest residents and a win for the entire community in that it benefits our city and planet.

Ypsi is very committed to solar power, but we need help in making this happen on a wider scale. Having this economy of scale is so important in terms of extending solar beyond middle class residents (like myself) to make it available to everyone!

As someone who lives and works in Ypsilanti, I strongly support this proposal. It centers equity by reducing energy costs for low-income families and ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy reach those who are too often left out. The plan also creates local jobs and builds workforce skills in solar installation, offering long-term economic and environmental benefits for the community. This is a thoughtful, community-driven project that deserves full support.

I am strongly in favor of this project. It targets funds where they are needed most, in the poorest neighborhoods of Ypsilanti, where a reduction in utility costs can make a significant difference in the monthly budget of our most vulnerable citizens. It has the added benefit of expanding the reach of renewal energy, something critically important as our federal government actively seeks to undermine measures aimed at mitigating climate change.

As a 30 year resident of Ypsilanti I whole heartedly support this proposal. Solar Ypsi and the folks spear heading this initiative has the knowledge and vision to follow through and make this happen. In a time with rising costs and increasing disparity between economic classes, I believe that this is a project that would decrease the disparity gap by helping to make residents less dependent on the cost of utilites.
